The adventure is about to begin...A Nepalese restaurant, decorated with paintings of Sherpas crossing perilous rope bridges with Everest soaring magnificently in the background. In the restaurant are four friends enjoying a rather delicious selction of curries and accompaniments. The topic of conversation idles towards the images on the wall and someone makes about what an experience it would be to visit Nepal and trek to Everest Base Camp and see Everest 'with their own eyes'
Fast forward 12 months and here we (Dave,Chris,Tina and Sue) are, days away from embarking on a trip of a lifetime to Nepal, Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. It has been a journey in itself getting this far with the planning, preparation, physical training, and the cost of the trip. Currently my house resembles a small outlet of Snow and Rock. Although nothing can prepare you for high altitude, we have been determined to get in great shape to withstand the physical challenges of the trek and have been regularly fitting in challenging 8-25 mile walks and gave our gear a final work out on Ben Nevis. Not really knowing what kind of cellular connectivity to expect, I'm taking a paper journal and also hope to use some of the internet cafes to add occasional entries in the 'trekkers log' If you want to follow our journey, I've put together a pictorial view of our trek which you'll find by clicking on Route on the menu |
A charitable causeMany people have asked if we are using the trip as an opportunity to raise money for a charitable cause. We are, because by doing so, this could be life changing trip for others too. The other inspiration for our trek was Everest Rocks. Registered as a charity in 2007, and co-founded by Mike Peters, two-times cancer survivor and internationally acclaimed singer of Welsh rock band The Alarm. Love Hope Strength Foundation as a charity promotes innovative, music related, outreach and awareness programmes for leukemia and cancer sufferers, survivors and their families. The charity raises awareness and recruits potential donors to the organ and bone marrow registers.
With very personal experiences of cancer in my family and with some of my most admired musical influences both affected and sadly lost through this terrible disease, is why we support Love Hope Strength, the leading Rock and Roll Cancer Charity. If you would like to make a donation, please visit our JustGiving Page, http://www.justgiving.com/EverestTrekkers Every donation will be an extra push to get us to the top. Because I am also a very great animal lover, I didn't want to miss the chance to raise some money for my other cause. So I will also be matching any donations I receive up to £200 for http://www.battersea.org.uk/ Love and Life Sue |
